@Peak Torque what length was your chain? max new chain lengths are around 114 links but looking at a chain length calcualtor I'll need at least 117. Can I combine two chains? using quick links or pins whats best?

I've been using old XT mechs to get bigger gearing for years. If you want a wide range double use a 3x front derailleur. I managed to make a 38/22 work with an 11-36 on the back with XT front and and rear with Sora Brifters. IMO that's the prime touring ratio, maybe go up to a 40/24 if you can get the right 11-40 cassette. And yeah mechs absolutely can deal with much bigger ratios than stated. GRX 1x with a 40/42 ratio is an absolute joke and I've no idea why anyone goes for it. Unless you're dealing with significant mud or sub-zero temps there's no reason to go 1x.

Hang on there. Aren't all movements and forces due to power applied to the crank arm? I know it's not what we want to measure, but one could argue that we could measure the actual power output of your legs, rather than the power applied to the drive train!..... The engineering and the mechanical design is excellent, However what will happen if the grease from the free hub was to leak past the interface of the disk break will it then contaminate the entire disk ? In the video I couldn’t see what the separation between/ seal application was. Very interesting great video good presentation 👍

Wouldn’t an advantage of hookless under the “less voids” be higher strength and more durability? I remember seeing videos of mountain bikers trying to break carbon rims with no tire on them, proving how strong they are. Funny because it’s a situation they are faced with more and more. 😂

GRX 2x is spec'd to 11-36 (not 11-34) and works with 11-40. I run a 48-31 with an 11-40 on my gravel bike without a goat link

I’m using 11spd di2 Ultegra with an 11-34 cassette and 50/34 on the front Are you able to help with some answers? Will I still need an extender if I’m using a R8070 GS and fit the 11-40 that you mentioned? I believe that the spacer that is used with the 11-34 is the same as the one that you mentioned. Did you just add quick links in? How to do you manage di2 via the app when 11-40 is not on there? I tend to use sync2 mode so will I need to change.

I have been watching all these (non-sarcastically) great engineers talking about bikes and material but I still don't know why my 150€ vintage steel MBK road bike and my Vitus 992 which costs about the same (which has a tire clearence of 23mm btw) are much more comfortable than ANY modern road bike that I have ever ridden

I did the Fred Whitton this year and had the same realisation in January about staying in Zone 2 - I live in London but even then some of the 8% hills that I was training on, the cadences were impossibly low to stay in the zone. I fitted 11-34 and a super compact 46-30 to my bike, used it for all the training and the Fred, and got up Hardknott in one go while everyone around me was walking! Pleased to see other people coming to the same conclusion. I find there's a lot of dumb bravado about gear ratios, and granny gears...

Road Racing Dying: hmmm, need to buy a license. USAC only seems to care about the elites. Pay a fee to get dropped in first 2 miles and then have a miserable solo experience. Elitist snoby attitude by racers and promoters. Mountain XC Racing Dying: well they keep making the courses harder and harder. So you need a better and better bike to even ride, let alone compete. Course designers and race promoters have pushed regular folks out of XC racing. Gravel: hey, we welcome everyone. Specail women's categories and promotion. Gravel is for everyone. Mass participation that actually works. Draws 1000s of people and then eventually all the snobby pros from road and XC because that's where all the people are now. Courses/events embrace local scenery and culture.

You can actually put 10-28. 10-30 10-33 10-36 cassette om the rear . It's compatible.

I’m about to do a similar mod, upgrading to R7000 with the medium cage mech and 36 tooth cassette so I don’t run out of puff. Just the cassette and chain left to purchase then my 1st fitting. Being actually fat and in my late 30s, extra low gears are the only way for me to climb the 17-22% climbs in my area. Going downhill on very tight switchbacks you’re simply not gonna pedal, only braking, so top end gears are moot. 34t up front and 10-44 at the back. Love it.

I did the same with my bike going to the dolomites. 11-42 rear and with a medium mec! with 34 52 front and 180 discs. the best combo!!
